Italian Hotels Have a Way of Making You Fall in Love

Italy has always had a certain relationship with romance.

Maybe it's the narrow streets and old stone buildings. The evening walks through illuminated piazzas. Dinner outside with a bottle of wine. The sound of Italian drifting from the table beside you.

Or perhaps it's simply the Italian ability to make ordinary moments feel like something more.

And sometimes, all it takes is the right hotel.

A Different Kind of Hotel Stay

Hotels in Italy can be much more than somewhere to sleep.

A small hotel overlooking the Mediterranean. A converted villa in Tuscany. A room with a balcony above a quiet street in Rome. A historic building hidden somewhere in Florence.

Even breakfast can become part of the experience — two cappuccinos, a couple of cornetti and nowhere you particularly need to be.

Of course, you don't need to be travelling with someone to enjoy it.

Italy also has a rather good reputation for unexpected introductions.

Which means knowing a little Italian might prove useful for considerably more than checking into your hotel.

A Few Words for the Romantic Side of Italy

Sei bellissima.
You're beautiful.

Speaking to a man, you would say:

Sei bellissimo.
You're very handsome.

If the evening is going particularly well:

Mi piace stare con te.
I like being with you.

Or perhaps:

Vorrei rivederti.
I'd like to see you again.

And if Italy has really worked its magic:

Mi sto innamorando di te.
I'm falling in love with you.

Although you may want to save that one until at least after breakfast.

First, You Still Have to Check In

Romance aside, there are a few practical phrases worth knowing when you arrive at your hotel.

One of the most useful is:

Ho una prenotazione a nome di...
I have a reservation under the name of...

Simply add your surname at the end.

The expression a nome di means under the name of, and you'll hear it frequently when dealing with hotels and reservations in Italy.

The receptionist may then ask:

Posso vedere il Suo documento d'identità?
May I see your ID?

Suo is the formal form of your. You'll hear this type of formal Italian frequently in hotels, restaurants and other professional situations.

You might also want to know:

A che ora è la colazione?
What time is breakfast?

Dov'è l'ascensore?
Where is the elevator?

And, depending on exactly how successful the romantic part of your Italian holiday has been:

Potremmo avere un'altra bottiglia di vino, per favore?
Could we have another bottle of wine, please?

Romance Is Better When You Can Actually Communicate

You don't need to speak perfect Italian to enjoy Italy.

You don't even need to speak very much.

But knowing a handful of useful phrases changes the experience.

You can walk into your hotel and explain that you have a reservation. Ask about breakfast. Report a problem with your room. Request something you need. Check out. Leave your luggage behind for a few hours.

And perhaps say something slightly more interesting to the person you met over that bottle of wine.

That's exactly why we created our Italian at the Hotel — From Check-In to Check-Out lesson.

It's a complete, practical Italian hotel conversation covering the experience from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave.

And you can watch the full lesson free on YouTube.

Because you never quite know what might happen in an Italian hotel.

But it helps to know what to say when it does.
